Retirement

Retirement Calculator

Estimate how current retirement savings and recurring contributions could grow between your current age and a planned retirement age, using a modeled annual rate and compounding frequency you enter. This is an educational projection, not a retirement recommendation, investment forecast, or guarantee.

Projection assumptions

Example starting numbers you can edit — not a recommended savings amount, a forecast, or a historical average. Results update as you type.

Whole years. The projection starts from this age.

Must be later than your current age. Years until retirement is the difference.

The starting balance in this model. Use 0 if you are modeling contributions only.

Added at the end of each contribution period, after compounding on that same date. Leave blank for $0.

A nominal annual rate you choose to model, with the compounding frequency below. This is not APY, not a guaranteed return, and not a recommendation.

How often modeled growth is added to the balance. Daily compounding uses a 365-day year.

Estimated balance at retirement

$370,561.45

After 35 years in this model, from age 30 to age 65. Educational estimate in future nominal dollars, not a predicted, guaranteed, or recommended result.

Inflation is not included. The $370,561.45 figure is a future nominal-dollar projection of the numbers you entered. It is not converted to today’s dollars, and it is not a spending-power estimate.

The 5% figure you entered is a nominal annual rate compounded monthly. The implied annual yield of that compounding assumption is 5.12% (APY). Those are not the same number unless compounding is annual. Neither figure is a forecast.

How the projection works

The estimate answers a narrow question: if current savings, the recurring contribution, contribution frequency, nominal annual rate, compounding frequency, current age, and planned retirement age you entered stayed the same, what would this model’s balance be at retirement age?

Time horizon is retirement age minus current age, in whole years. The growth math is not a second retirement formula. It reuses the same compound-growth engine as the Compound Interest Calculator and the Savings Goal Calculator.

Starting values on the form are examples you can change. They are not a recommended contribution, a typical U.S. savings rate, or a historical market return. FinanceAvatar does not fetch or display an expected investment return.

Why time horizon matters

Each extra year in the model both adds another round of contributions and gives existing balances more compounding periods. A longer horizon can change the ending mix of contributions versus modeled growth even when the contribution and rate stay the same. That is a property of this constant-rate model, not a claim about what markets will do.

A one-year difference in retirement age changes the number of compounding and contribution events. The calculator does not stretch or compress a year, model a partial year of age, or treat equal current and retirement ages as a special zero-year case.

Contributions versus modeled growth

The ending balance is current savings plus total future contributions plus modeled growth, after the same year-end cent rounding used on the compound-interest page. Modeled growth can be positive, zero, or negative depending on the rate you enter.

Total future contributions equal the recurring contribution times the number of contribution periods per year times the number of years. The contribution size does not increase over time in this MVP. A $0 contribution is allowed; the projection then grows current savings only.

Compounding

Call the nominal annual rate r (as a decimal) and the compounding periods per year n. Annual compounding uses n = 1, quarterly 4, monthly 12, and daily 365. Each compounding period multiplies the balance by 1 + r/n.

With no additional contributions, that is the standard compound amount P × (1 + r/n)n t for t years, rounded to the nearest cent at each year-end snapshot and at the final result.

Contributions are ordinary (end-of-period). They are added at the end of each monthly or annual contribution period, after any compounding that falls on the same date. If contribution frequency and compounding frequency differ, the model steps through equally spaced sub-periods in a year so both events land on an exact step. Daily compounding uses a 365-day year, not calendar months or leap years.

The number you type is a nominal annual rate. The page also shows an implied APY for that assumption: (1 + r/n)n − 1. If compounding is annual, those two percentages match. Neither figure is a forecast.

Nominal future dollars

The headline balance is a future nominal-dollar amount. Inflation is not included. The page does not convert that figure into today’s dollars, and it does not mix a real (inflation-adjusted) rate with a nominal contribution stream.

A dollar at retirement age is not automatically worth a dollar today. This calculator leaves that conversion out rather than silently applying an inflation rate you did not enter.

Why actual investment returns vary

A constant modeled rate is a convenience for the math, not a description of markets. Investment returns can be higher or lower than the number you type, including sequences of gains and losses. The Investor.gov glossary on risk describes risk as uncertainty about the rate of return and the potential harm when returns are not what an investor expected.

The −2 / entered / +2 columns are only a sensitivity check on the constant rate you typed. They are not a range of likely outcomes, a confidence interval, or a recommendation.

What the calculator does not include

Unless you already folded an amount into current savings or the contribution field, this projection does not add:

  • Social Security benefits
  • Employer matching contributions
  • Pension income
  • Inflation or a conversion to today’s dollars
  • Taxes
  • Investment fees
  • Required minimum distributions
  • Retirement withdrawals or a spending plan
  • A historical average or expected market return
  • Annual contribution increases

Social Security is a separate federal benefit. For official information and SSA’s own benefit tools, see SSA Retirement benefits and SSA Benefit Calculators. This page does not estimate a Social Security payment.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Current age and planned retirement age are whole years. Retirement age must be later than current age.
  • The modeled rate does not change over the horizon unless you edit it.
  • Contributions stay the same size and keep the frequency you chose.
  • Currency amounts are rounded to the nearest cent at each year-end row and in the headline result. Period growth uses full-precision factors, then the year-end balance is rounded.
  • A 0% rate adds no growth. A negative rate reduces the balance each compounding period.
  • The model does not choose an account type, contribution limit, or withdrawal rule.

Methodology

Validate ages, money amounts, the modeled rate, and the frequency choices. If any input is invalid, show field errors and do not display a substitute sample result.

Set years = retirement age − current age. Call growCompoundBalance with current savings as principal, the recurring contribution, contribution frequency, nominal annual rate, that year count, and compounding frequency. Map each growth year into a retirement row whose age is current age + year number.

Repeat the same call at the entered rate minus 2 percentage points, the entered rate, and the entered rate plus 2 percentage points, holding every other assumption fixed. Report estimated retirement balance under each.

Rounding and contribution timing follow the site Methodology page and the compound interest implementation: end-of-period contributions, compound first then contribute when events coincide, year-end cent rounding, and the identity ending balance = current savings + future contributions + modeled growth.

Retirement calculator FAQ

Is this a recommendation of how much I should have saved?

No. The calculator projects the numbers you enter. It does not compare your savings with a target, a rule of thumb, or an age-based benchmark, and it does not tell you how much you should have saved.

What time horizon does the model use?

Years until retirement equals planned retirement age minus current age. Both ages must be whole numbers, and retirement age must be later than current age. If the ages are equal or retirement age is earlier, the calculator asks you to correct the ages instead of inventing a zero-year or negative-year result.

Are the results in today’s dollars?

No. The primary estimate is in future nominal dollars. Inflation is not included, and the page does not convert the ending balance to today’s purchasing power.

Does this include Social Security, a pension, or an employer match?

No. Those amounts are outside this projection unless you already included them in the current-savings or contribution numbers you typed. Official Social Security benefit information is on SSA.gov; this page does not estimate a benefit.

When are contributions added?

At the end of each monthly or annual contribution period, after any compounding that falls on the same date. That matches the Compound Interest Calculator. A contribution at the very end of the horizon earns no modeled growth in that last period.

Is the rate I enter an expected investment return?

No. You type a nominal annual rate to model. FinanceAvatar does not fetch a market return, historical average, or recommended rate. Actual investment returns vary, including years with losses.

What do the −2 / entered / +2 columns mean?

They keep ages, current savings, contribution, frequency, and compounding the same, then repeat the projection at three nominal rates: two percentage points below the rate you entered, the rate you entered, and two percentage points above it. They are hypothetical sensitivity examples. No column is labeled better, expected, or recommended.

Can the modeled rate be negative or zero?

Yes. 0% means the ending balance is current savings plus future contributions. A negative rate reduces the balance each compounding period. Reasonable negative rates are allowed; the model stops if a period factor would be zero or negative.
