Savings Goal Calculator
Estimate how much to contribute each month or year to reach a savings target, given what you already have, how long you will save, and a modeled annual rate. This is an educational solution of the numbers you enter, not a forecast.
Last reviewed September 21, 2026
Required contribution
$1,000.00/mo
End-of-month amount in this model to reach $12,000.00 in 1 year. Educational estimate, not a forecast.
The 0% figure you entered is a nominal annual rate compounded monthly. The implied annual yield of that compounding assumption is 0% (APY). This is a savings-goal calculation from those assumptions, not a guaranteed account yield or investment return.

What makes up the projected balance
Current savings, additional contributions, and modeled growth. Widths are proportional to those amounts.
- Current savings $0.00
- Contributions $12,000.00
- Growth $0.00
The line is the modeled year-end balance. The table below is the accessible year-by-year data.
Rate scenarios
These columns keep your goal, current savings, years, compounding, and contribution frequency the same. They use the entered nominal annual rate minus 2 percentage points, the entered rate, and the entered rate plus 2 percentage points. They are hypothetical illustrations, not forecasts, and no column is labeled better or recommended.
Entered rate − 2 percentage points
-2% nominal annual rate
- Required contribution
- $1,009.20/mo
- Projected ending balance
- $12,000.00
Entered rate
0% nominal annual rate
- Required contribution
- $1,000.00/mo
- Projected ending balance
- $12,000.00
Entered rate + 2 percentage points
2% nominal annual rate
- Required contribution

Year-by-year projection
Each row is a year-end snapshot using the required contribution shown above. Contributions are added at the end of each contribution period.
| Year | Starting balance | Contributions | Modeled growth | Ending balance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $0.00 | $12,000.00 | $0.00 | $12,000.00 |

What this result means
The estimate answers a narrow inverse question: if the savings goal, current savings, years, nominal annual rate, compounding frequency, and contribution frequency you entered stayed the same, what recurring end-of-period contribution would this model need so the projected ending balance meets the goal?
That is a savings-goal calculation, not a prediction that you will earn the modeled rate. Starting values on the form are examples you can change. They are not a recommended savings rate, a typical U.S. yield, or a historical market return.
How the required contribution is calculated
This page reuses the same growth engine as the Compound Interest Calculator. It does not use a second, inconsistent future-value formula.
First it projects current savings with a $0 contribution. If that projected balance already meets or exceeds the goal, the required contribution is $0, not a withdrawal. Otherwise it searches for the smallest cent-denominated contribution that makes the growth engine’s ending balance at least the goal. Contributions are ordinary (end of period): compound first, then contribute when both events fall on the same date.
After that contribution is rounded to the nearest cent, the growth engine is run again. The displayed amount is the one that still reaches the target in the model. A contribution $0.01 smaller is not used if it would leave the projected balance below the goal.
Search is capped at $1,000,000 per contribution period and 64 solver steps so the page cannot loop or return Infinity or NaN. If that cap is not enough, the calculator reports that the goal is not reached at that maximum rather than inventing a larger payment.
Nominal rate versus APY
The number you type is a nominal annual rate with the compounding frequency you selected. The implied APY of that assumption is (1 + r/n)n − 1, the same conversion as on the compound interest page. It is not a bank’s legal APY disclosure.
What the calculator does not include
- Taxes, inflation, or fees
- Variable rates or promotional yields
- Beginning-of-period contributions
- A historical average or expected market return
- Employer matches or tax-advantaged account rules
Assumptions and limitations
- The modeled rate does not change over the horizon unless you edit it.
- The solved contribution stays the same size each period.
- Daily compounding uses a 365-day year, not calendar months or leap years.
- Currency amounts are rounded to the nearest cent. The displayed contribution is the minimum cent amount that still meets the goal in this model.
Savings goal calculator FAQ
Is this a forecast of what I will actually save?
No. It solves for a contribution that reaches your target if the numbers you entered stayed the same. The modeled rate is an assumption, not a guaranteed account yield or investment return.
When are contributions added?
At the end of each monthly or annual contribution period, after any compounding that falls on the same date. That matches the Compound Interest Calculator. A contribution at the very end of the horizon earns no modeled growth in that last period.
What if my current savings already cover the goal?
If current savings alone are projected to meet or exceed the goal with $0 additional contributions, the required contribution is $0, not a negative amount. The projected ending balance is still shown.
Is the rate I enter an APY?
No. You enter a nominal annual rate. The calculator uses the same compounding conversion as the Compound Interest Calculator and also shows the implied APY of that assumption. A bank APY disclosure can differ.
Why might the contribution be a few cents above a simple division?
The displayed amount is rounded to the nearest cent, then checked in the growth model so the projected ending balance still meets the goal. If rounding down would miss the target, the contribution is the next cent up.
What do the −2 / entered / +2 rate columns mean?
They keep the goal, current savings, years, and frequencies the same and solve again at three nominal rates. They are hypothetical illustrations. No column is labeled better, expected, or recommended.
